GREATNESS
What makes our country great? Can any single act or deed make us great? I find greatness defined as “distinguished or eminent.” I can relate to that definition very easily.
Our nation has been great since its very inception. This country began a journey down a road that had never been traveled before. We have set the standard for freedom, justice and a unique way of life. While we are not a Democracy, we are a Constitutional Republic that has laws governing society and maintains order. This rule of law and concept of order is being tested daily, and very strongly.
Almost daily Mr. Donald Trump, the presumed republican nominee, holds energetic political rallies, usually in large venues that attract attention. Day after day we see and hear of the protests that take place attempting to disrupt these rallies. I hear the protesters chanting “America was never great” in response to the election theme of Mr. Trump that states “Make America Great Again.” It appears to me that most of the protesters are young, spoiled and unemployed. If employed they wouldn’t have time for such shenanigans. The destruction of property is no big deal to them because they have never built or created anything but a mess. These protesters, and possible rioters, evidently do not realize that our very greatness as a country enables them to act the way they now act. The wide ranging freedom we have in this country is more enabling than any other country on earth.
We all have the right to protest anywhere at any time. However our right ends when it oversteps the other person’s rights. Controlled, orderly protests are most normally accepted and not interfered with. We have the right to protest but we also have the right to express our thoughts and feelings in public, not as a protest, but as an informational process or to energize a political movement.
We can lose our greatness very easily and very quickly. All we need do is stand silently by while the demonstrators push for and welcome anarchy. Our police are afraid to intercede because of political correctness. Our federal judiciary is so biased they have become ineffective. We need strong leadership as never before.
Yes, for over two hundred years the United States of America has been great. We have opened our borders and our wallets to the needy of the world seeking a new life. Times change and we must also. We can remain charitable while being selective on who we let into this country. Our security has been greatly taken for granted. We must maintain a well equipped, well staffed military. We need to open our lands to drilling for oil as we relax some restrictions on farmers that feed the world. Yes, there was a time we were greater and more respected than we now are, but that can change for the good.
This election season is unlike any that have come before. The rules are different and the players are unique. We still must act with dignity and stop the violent protests we see. A fair exchange of policies and ideas can only help people to determine the candidate that is best for our nation.
Is Donald Trump the best choice for us, our country, and the rest of the world? I can’t say with absolute surety that I have the answer. I think we can survive four of a Trump presidency much better than we could with a Clinton or Sanders in the White House. Mr. Trump is brash, unpolished and in some instances crude. He speaks from the heart usually with no notes. To speak in this manner I think he must love this country and will try to do what he thinks is best. The other two scare me.
I know I will support wholeheartedly a loud, boorish, abrasive individual before I would entertain such thoughts for a Socialist or a failed Secretary of State that should be indicted, tried and convicted.
