At last the midterm elections for 2018 are over and settled. I think most people and candidates have accepted the results and are ready to move on. I have one thing I can’t seem to shake. The depths we have fallen in name calling of individuals and candidates and the outright lies that are promulgated. I was raised to have respect for others no matter what my personal thoughts might be.
There was a time that moral character was an issue when considering a candidates worthiness to serve if elected. A proven liar was never considered. Criticism of your opponent was normal but the language used was usually appropriate to be used most anywhere.
Now slander and profanity run rampant. It seems we have lost an important element of decency, our conscience.
I want to get my conscience back.
It seems there’s no more right or wrong.
I think my heads stuck in a sack
Where has my conscience, really gone.
I’m not the only one that strays
I’m not the only one that wonders why.
There was a time we’d never stray
A time our deeds, would make a family cry.
There was a time of moral codes
Which all would surely mind
Each action had its own consequence
And family pride was for all time.
Our families could not handle shame,
We lived for all to proudly see.
We had no one to share the blame,
We were responsible, both you and me.
Our leaders were upstanding,
They worked with conscience clear
Their morals were unbending
And they had no one to fear.
We need to get our conscience back
There’s still the right and wrong.
We know how we should really act
To make our stature strong.
We really need our conscience back
And then “In God we’ll trust.”
We need to rid ourselves of all the lust
And get our conscience back.
We all need to all step back and practice dignity and old fashion manners. Maybe this could help heal the divide our country now endures.
…old will not be old when I get there……
