The hot topic in Washington and headlining most media output today is Immigration reform. We have over the last years worked ourselves into a corner and no one wants or can make a decision on what to do about the situation. I have listened to politicians, heard the talking heads and read several articles on the illegal immigrants and DACA individuals and have tried to make decisions on what should be done. Hopefully you have thought about this and have drawn your own conclusions. Let’s compare thoughts.
The policy known as DACA was enacted illegally by past-President Obama through executive order. Neither he nor any president has the constitutional authority to act as he did. The Constitution of the United States plainly states in Article 2 Section 3 Clause 1 “The plenary and unqualified power of the federal government to regulate immigration, naturalization, and related foreign policy belongs to Congress.” But what was done was done and now we must deal with it. All “dreamers” must be given a route for legalization and citizenship, not amnesty. They should have a period not to exceed five years to make application and follow the procedure and all requirements to attain citizenship. It being a privilege and dream of theirs to become citizen’s one requirement that should be added, the requirement to be proficient in our language which is English. All others including parents that brought these individuals here, relatives and extended family members should be deported as the criminals they are.
Anchor babies shall not be an issue. The 14th amendment to the Constitution, adopted July 9, 1868 states; “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside.” The parents came here illegally to have these babies but that does not make them citizens. The parents being illegal here are still under the jurisdiction of the country they came from, Mexico. This erases the excuse for the anchor babies and their families. From this point forward they also should be returned to their country of origin.
Secure borders must be maintained. No country can remain sovereign without controlled borders and controlled immigration. We need a wall on the southern border so we must build one. In the future if it becomes necessary for the northern border to have additional security we will need to take action there. People seeking entry to the United States, especially through the southern border must be vetted. These individuals must show they comply with and meet all the requirements for entry and additionally they must prove a positive value to our country before entering. This value can be established with education and/or skills that are beneficial. These immigrants must show a responsible way providing for their own needs when entering and are subject to receiving any welfare or assistance during their life time. These people are supposedly seeking a better way of life and an opportunity to experience the American Dream, let them work for it, not have it handed to them on a silver plate.
I am tired of hearing the rhetoric from illegals “we have the right.” There are certain rights that are guaranteed the citizens of this great country. The important word in the previous sentence is “citizens.” The illegals that yell and scream so loudly actually have zero rights. They simply are not citizens therefore any guaranteed rights, other that the right to go home, are not applicable to them.
There should never have been and must be ended immediately is the practice of chain immigration, also known as family unification, and the Visa Lottery program. In no way should an individual that wins the opportunity to enter this country through a lottery program be allowed to automatically bring twenty relatives, unvetted, with him or her. Lunacy and idiocy are running wild in Washington D.C. and is easily found
Education is more important than ever before. Our natural born citizens should have the same benefits or better that the naturalized immigrants. Presently all immigrants are given advantages over natural citizens in receiving grants, loans and even admission into institutions of higher learning. If the requirement for fluency in English is enforced it will improve the education system from pre-kindergarten to college degrees. If we are a country where “all men are created equal” we need to act like it.
Is all the above politically correct? No it isn’t and I don’t intend it to be. But in my way of thinking it is realistic and attainable. The United States is a country of immigrants but “we the people” need to have input and the power to determine who comes here. Anyone that will not be a burden to our society and has the ability to contribute to it will always be welcome.
I may be wrong in some areas, but I’m still right. As Barry Goldwater proudly proclaimed “in your heart you know I’m right.
