I was pleasantly surprised at the number of responses I received after my last post. Responses are always welcome. I was equally surprised that every respondent shared the same feelings about the do nothing congress I have repeatedly expressed. I think there are many average Americans that feel as we do but are looking for leadership to take action.
At this time in our history and with the hostilities being expressed between the parties, there is only one way I can think of to remedy this malady. We the people need to unite and take advantage of actions provided us by Article V of the United States Constitution. We need our state governments, governors and attorneys general, to muster as one and call a Convention of the States. This is one way we can make amendments to the Constitution without the involvement of congress. It takes thirty-four of the states to be united in calling for this convention. At this time the movement is already underway. Texas was the most recent state to join and their addition brings the total to eleven. We have a way to go.
We have serious issues that our congress will never address, so we need to relieve them of the conflict. Once elected to office, all too often, it becomes a position they will hold for life. This does not make it necessary to hear the will of the people. They are free to play their power games and amass wealth. I would like to see the first proposed amendment enact term limits. When length of servitude is imposed, the fear of facing difficult decisions will be easier and action for the betterment of our nation will commence.
The next amendment I would like to see concerns securing our borders. We welcome immigrants, but they must be legal. This issue becomes unworkable due to two main reasons. Democrats look at every person that enters our country a new democrat vote. This is manipulated by opening the welfare coffers to illegals, making them dependent on the state and democrats will continue to provide more and more entitlements. The other reason is that republicans do not want the borders secured because it would limit the cheap labor force now enjoyed, and their economic fortunes would diminish due to the reduced trade between the immigrants and business owners.
The only way to have true, honest and fair tax reform would be through the efforts of a Convention of the States. As long as congress controls the tax code, we will never see reductions in personal taxes. Once again there are significant differences in the thought processes for the two parties. The democrats feel that all the currency is theirs and is simply on loan to us. Therefore there is no limit to what they can collect. If the collection of excessive taxes causes a hardship, don’t worry. Be happy, the democrats will authorize more entitlements. The republicans have their own reasons for upping the taxes they talk about lowering. The only way they know to solve any problem is to pour money on it. Pork barrel projects and ridiculously expensive and elaborate special interests could not continue without a huge influx of money.
If you agree that this action is needed, become active. Get involved and start a letter writing campaign with your neighbors, friends and relatives. Our Constitution was created by some very wise men, albeit some were very cantankerous. They made provisions for our republic democracy to survive. It is our responsibility to be aware of these options and then use them to save our country with God’s help. I have a dream, really, we will make America great again.
