EXPECTATIONS

“Great Expectations” is a classic literary achievement written by Charles Dickens. Today in the political arena we are experiencing our own variety of great expectations that might be better titled “Great Anticipation.”

It has been three weeks since our national election where the hopes, dreams and expectations of many Americans were demonstrated at the voting booths across our land. Mr. Donald Trump won the dubious job of rebuilding America and making it strong and respected again.  While the hope of these voters was placed on the shoulders of Mr. Trump, I hope we realize no one person can accomplish this task alone.  Now the job of selecting good people to help lead and direct our country has begun.

The nominations or selections made up to this point have not been easy. An extremely successful businessman now has to transfer this acumen to the world of politics on a giant world stage.  Never in my memory has anyone suffered the microscopic view of the process as we now see.  There have been nominations for Attorney General, U.N. Ambassador, Chief of Staff and other vitally important positions.  As one group of loyal Americans we need to forget party loyalties and endorse those qualified for their respective positions.

A tornado of activity has surrounded the pending nomination for a candidate to become Secretary of State. I like many others sit in amazement at the name of Mitt Romney continuously being rolled out for this position.  Granted, both the President-elect and Mr. Romney have similarities in their business successes, is this person the proper one to fill this important post.  Secretary of State is the most visible of all the positions to be filled.  This position mandates that the secretary shares the same goals and vision as the incoming President.  There must be cohesiveness and loyalty exhibited by both parties.  Mr. Trump is a newcomer to the world of politics while Mr. Romney is not.  Regardless, Mr. Trump was elected, charged with the duties and cannot make decisions that will hurt our rebuilding.

Mr. Romney is a member of the establishment that we demonstrated we did not want. The family of Romney has been political for many years.  George Romney, a former governor of Michigan, did everything he possibly could to derail the campaign of Barry Goldwater when he ran for the office of President.  Now his son has copied this behavior and belittled and chided Mr. Trump repeatedly since his campaign began.  Where is the foundation for cooperation and loyalty found in his past actions and statements?

Mr. Trump, we elected you based on your campaign and the pledges you made. We still have faith that you will do the right things to secure us and improve our position in the world.  The media does not have the power or support of the people to force you into making hasty decisions that may be wrong, in assembling your team.  I am convinced you know much more than I about Mr. Romney, but I am still leery of the direction he may lead you and us.

I humbly beseech you to seek guidance from above and make your selections based on solid information that we average people probably don’t have. We cannot afford to have the wrong people only to find out later we need a redo.  You deserve every opportunity to assemble the right team, and we support you in so doing.

You are the President-elect. Please use every resource available to you and proceed with caution.  At this time in history you have the chance to accomplish more than any elected official in our recent past.  Forget, as much as is possible the media, and act as the people that elected you believed you would.  America is in your hands to make great again. And we selected you to accomplish this task.

God bless you and your challenges and may God bless America, again.

We may agree, and that’s fine, or we may disagree, that’s okay too.  My sole purpose is to encourage others to think, study, and become involved.
