It is very easy for me to become overwhelmed. I find myself today overwhelmed by the immigration fiasco and the numbers of illegal immigrants flooding into this country. Immigration laws have been amended and altered many times over the years. Many times during the history of our country immigrants have been banned from entering based on the country they originated in, their ethnicity and their religions. Many minorities and immigrants do take advantage of the opportunity before them, others do not. Legal immigrants from any country are always welcome, that is what this country has been built on. Below is one example of the application of the immigration law and enforcement in 1954.
In 1954, Operation Wetback forced the return of thousands of illegal immigrants to Mexico.[49] Between 1944 and 1954, “the decade of the wetback,” the number of illegal immigrants coming from Mexico increased by 6,000 percent. It is estimated that before Operation Wetback got under way, more than a million workers had crossed the Rio Grande illegally. Cheap labor displaced native agricultural workers, and increased violation of labor laws and discrimination encouraged criminality, disease, and illiteracy. According to a study conducted in 1950 by the President’s Commission on Migratory Labor in Texas, the Rio Grande Valley cotton growers were paying approximately half of the wages paid elsewhere in Texas. The United States Border Patrol aided by municipal, county, state, federal authorities, and the military, began a quasi-military operation of the search and seizure of all illegal immigrants. Fanning out from the lower Rio Grande Valley, Operation Wetback moved Northward. Initially, illegal immigrants were repatriated through Presidio because the Mexican city across the border, Ojinaga, had rail connections to the interior of Mexico by which workers could be quickly moved on to Durango. The forces used by the government were relatively small, perhaps no more than 700 men, but were augmented by border patrol officials who hoped to scare illegal workers into fleeing back to Mexico. Ships became a preferred mode of transport because they carried illegal workers farther from the border than buses, trucks, or trains. It is difficult to estimate the number of illegal immigrants that left due to the operation—most voluntarily. The INS claimed as many as 1,300,000, though the number officially apprehended did not come anywhere near this total. The program was ultimately abandoned due to questions surrounding the ethics of its implementation. Citizens of Mexican descent complained of police stopping all “Mexican looking” people and utilizing extreme “police-state” methods including deportation of American-born children who were citizens by law.
We have honored a quota for admitting foreign aliens into our country many times. Legal immigrants were always welcomed within the published limits. The usual practice was for a person or family to be sponsored for immigration. The sponsor was responsible for the new immigrants housing and well being. Immigrants were encouraged to learn the English language and assimilate into life and work in their new country. Government did not meet these people at the border with open checkbooks. Illegal’s now know they can enter our country get free housing, free medical attention, food stamps and a free education. Based on that, why not come to the land of milk and honey.
We have an abundance of labor from the unemployed and low income families yet we give these jobs to the illegal. Convicts and criminals, along with the illegal immigrant receive more and better welfare and attention than our long time citizens. This is not justice.
The Democrat party, headed by Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, welcome these illegal immigrants not as people but very simply as Democrat voters. This same Democrat party courts the vote of black and Mexican residents, promising unlimited assistance without work. The Great Society initialized by Lyndon Johnson was presented as a path out of poverty but again people were misled. This Great Society was a means of trapping minorities in their situations and keeping them there. The incentive to work and prosper was destroyed. The truth is the Democratic Party uses these groups for votes and doesn’t care about the individual. Name me one program that has truly benefited minorities and was initiated by democrats. There is not one.
While being considered radical, Mr. Trump is on the correct path. Our borders must be secure and immigration must be controlled. We do not want people coming in whose primary desire and cause is to kill us. We want people that will be proud of their new country, abide by established laws and help make America great again. We can accomplish this if we vote.
If this is the speech of a bigot, so be it. Look up the definition of bigot and see if Mr. Trump qualifies for this title as many think.
