The year was 1964. Lyndon Baines Johnson was president, the Vietnam War was raging, protests were becoming the norm, and the world was a restless, unstable place. Top 40 radio stations ruled the airways and the unexpected were always expected. One song creating new sound waves was being aired over and over. Performed by Bob Dylan, “The Eve of Destruction,” told a story most young people could relate to and understand. Would there be a place for it if that song were to be introduced today?
The establishment just won’t give up or cede defeat. The rich, white, good old boys club is witnessing its own self destruction. The underhanded movements to replace the choice of the people for the Republican presidential nominee, or to withdraw all party financing for his campaign, is going nowhere in a hurry. The letter circulating inciting such actions is signed by former elected officials and office holders. The operative word here is: former. There is not one currently serving member of congress or office holder that has joined this bandwagon, publicly. This group of defectors is putting our country toward the eve of destruction.
The establishment does not recognize the fact that the general populace is fed up with their shenanigans and corruption. The establishment cannot point to a single act or accomplishment that has helped our country in the last three decades or longer. Voices of extreme minorities have been enabled in a manner to deny any use of common sense. Special interest groups and big money donors have become the force behind congress.
The “Grand Old Party” (GOP) can rename itself to the Grand New Party. The Republican Party is being taken over by young nationalists. This new group is completely fed up with the status quo. It is time for change. The only way to avoid destruction within is to rid ourselves of the burden of living under career politicians. These new Republicans care for our country. They are proud of the heritage we have. They will not be quiet or step aside and not be heard. Donald Trump has been placed in a position to be the speaker for what was once known as the silent majority. They are not quiet anymore.
A vote on November 8, 2016 for Mr. Trump may not lead us immediately to the Promised Land or a land of utopia, but it is a step in that direction. Four years of a Trump Presidency will not cause destruction, we can survive that. A vote for a third party candidate is most assuredly a vote against Trump and a vote for Hillary Clinton. A write in vote for some idealistic, dream person is another vote for the Democrat nominee.
Four years of Donald Trump will probably bring hard times for many unsuspecting individuals, but is survivable. Four years of Hillary Clinton as president will bring destruction. The past seven plus years has been a continual step backward, and to continue this march with Hillary is to bring the end of our country and way of life as we have known it to be.
Race relations have continued to regress since the present regime has come to office. The economy is much weaker than before and our prestige in the world community has reached new lows.
The only way I know of to reverse these trends is to replace the ones that got us here. We must become involved; it concerns every one of us. Register to vote, and then take the action to vote. We can avoid destruction by uniting and overcoming the desires of the old establishment. Remember how the song ends, and make a difference.
“An’ tell me, over and over and over again, my friend,
You don’t believe we’re on the eve of destruction,
No, no, you don’t believe we’re on the eve of destruction.”
