To maintain complete transparency, I must admit that I have, during my lifetime on more than one occasion, broken the law. Every instance I can recall when I found myself in violation of known laws, it was vehicle and speed related. I am so fortunate that not once did I ever encounter a peace officer that was on a mission to kill someone that particular day. When stopped I always did as I was instructed: keep your hands where I can see them; stay in your car; show me your driver license, registration and insurance card. I obeyed and they never threatened or pulled a gun on me. This is just another demonstration showing how intelligent I am. I did what I was told to do.
While viewing the Democratic National Convention one evening I witnessed something that seemed out of order. Front and center on the stage stood a line of black ladies, all sharing something in common. Each one had suffered a death of a loved one at the hands of the police. Another common link with these ladies was; the person killed did not do what he was instructed to do by the police. What are we missing here? Black lives matter has lost its original meaning. It has become a battle cry for those that hate America and is used to incite unrest at any gathering of interested parties.
It is not only people of color that protest. Many white people also hate America and what it stands for. Most of these live off the welfare state yet advocate anarchy. Uneducated people do foolish things.
Unfortunately these situations most often involve a black male and a white policeman. There is a huge difference in what the two are doing prior to the time of the altercation. The policeman is performing his duties trying to protect and serve the community he is in. Never knowing what situation he may be facing he responds to any call issued putting his life in possible jeopardy. The victim is in a place he should not be or in the act of doing what he should not or has just committed a crime. Usually the scene develops into a dangerous confrontation for one simple reason; the person does not do as instructed and often attempts to disarm and kill the very policeman that has been protecting his neighborhood. What are we missing here?
I personally have relatives that retired after twenty-five plus years in law enforcement. Never in this time period did he unholster his weapon while on duty. In the dark of night and rain, snow or ice these people never know what they will face. Yet, in metropolitan areas, suburban neighborhoods, on freeways or dark, lonely rural back roads they bravely do their job.
We need to keep politics out of law enforcement. We do not need a president or attorney general making accusatory statements without knowing the facts and details. We do need a justice department that will investigate as aggressively when a peace officer is murdered as when any citizen is shot or making charges of unnecessary violence. Without the fair, yet determined rule of law being enforced our way of life will rapidly disappear. Anarchy will run rampant and we will all suffer the consequences. No one would feel safe leaving their homes to go shopping or places of entertainment.
I regularly attend a small church. On any given Sunday there will be more than one armed person in the congregation with me. I accept that God is my protector but I also realize we must be prepared to protect ourselves and others. It is a shame we have evolved into this climate. Maybe this is the climate change we should address and not focus so much attention to a hole in the ozone layer.
Division of the races is more evident now than has been experienced in many years. Laws can be passed to even the playing field for all, but not everyone will follow these laws. Until we can accept all as equal there will be no unity. We cannot have unity as long as one segment of people holds grudges from centuries ago and harbor hate for all those of a different color.
I pray that the one God will intervene and lead us to a world of peaceful acceptance of one another. May the golden rule become the dominant factor in any and all laws enacted? Living a Christ like life will cure many problems and bring understanding and peace.
