ELECTIONS
The life of politics can be very fickle. How many times have you heard, “I voted for the lesser of two evils’” or “there really wasn’t much to choose from?” Unfortunately these words are uttered much too often in this land. Have we reached the point where the most qualified and capable person to assume the job of President will not subject himself or his family to the grueling trials of running?
In my opinion, probably the best man, based on how I qualify a good person, to ever win the presidency was James Earl Carter. However, there were absolutely no positive improvements attained during his tenure, in fact respect for America from the rest of the world almost disappeared. On the other hand, in my opinion, one of the most ruthless, unprincipled persons having no morals was William Jefferson (Blythe III) Clinton. Again however, during his time in office much was accomplished. His second term was his most successful.
We need to find the most qualified, honest and moral person in America, regardless of political party affiliation, and usher him into the sacred oval office of President of The United States. Unfortunately this is impossible to achieve today. We will once again settle for what the majority of Americans choose from the pool that is running. It is more important to look good on TV, have good sound bites, and be able to speak eloquently, regardless of what they are saying. The majority of the rhetoric spewed forth is complete rubbish. Anything to garner another vote is allowed to said, reported on and believed. Not only can they not get action in congress to do some of these things, other items would in reality be detrimental to the welfare of our country. The election has become a huge popularity contest based on looks and speech rather than one’s ability to govern.
History has strange ways of repeating itself. Democrats have a very successful track record for filling the office of president in recent history. In the last eighty-four years the Republican Party cannot brag of having a winning ticket unless there was a Nixon or a Bush on the ticket. The last time there was a President and Vice-President winning the office under the banner of the Republican Party was 1928 with Herbert Hoover being the victor along with running mate Charles Curtis. They served only one term.
This sounds worse than it really is at first glance. The Republicans did win in 1952 and 1956 with Eisenhower/Nixon and later Ronald Reagan had George H.W. Bush as a running mate. Each of these campaigns served two terms. Lest you feel I overlooked Gerald Ford, I did not; he ascended into office from the office of Vice-President upon Nixon’s resignation and was not subsequently elected. George H.W. Bush won the election in 1988 and served one term, then lost reelection to Bill Clinton. George W. Bush won and served two terms beginning in 2000. You see we weren’t without Republicans in office for 84 years, it’s just there was a Nixon or Bush involved. It appears the elections of 2016 will have neither family name represented.
There is only one way to stop history from repeating itself. If you are a Republican, and want to win the election, with neither of these old family names on the ticket, you have a job to do. It is a very big job that will take a commitment. You will invest time and effort accomplishing this job. “Your mission, should you decide to accept it,” is to become educated on the issues and the stance your candidate has on it. Campaign for the candidate of your choice, register to vote, go to the polls, and then pull the lever for your selection. Be proud of your choice and be an involved American.
